Marte Meo: An Attachment-based approach to working with families
Marte Meo is a practical approach that supports everyday interactions between parents and their infants and children. It strengthens parent–child relationships by helping caregivers recognise and improve the quality of everyday moments of connection and communication.
The Marte Meo method was developed in the Netherlands by Maria Aarts more than forty years ago and is now used in over 43 countries worldwide. It originated from her work with children with autism and has since expanded into many areas of human development and care.
The term “Marte Meo” comes from old Latin texts. “Marte” means strength and “Meo” means me or independently. The phrase can be translated as “on one’s own strength.” The method is strengths-based and focuses on recognising what parents, caregivers, and educators are already doing well, and how these existing skills can be further developed.
Marte Meo emphasises the importance of connection and communication in building relationships and supporting children’s social, emotional, and language development.
Often described as the “how-to” of attachment work, Marte Meo complements programs such as the Circle of Security (COS). While COS provides the theoretical understanding of attachment, Marte Meo demonstrates how these principles can be applied in everyday interactions. The method is flexible rather than scripted and can be adapted to a wide range of settings.
The training is suitable for any professional working with children and families, child and adolescent mental health practitioners, early childhood educators, aged care workers, and professionals working with people with disabilities, as the principles of supportive communication and relationship-building are relevant across the lifespan.
